NSW ICAC lobbying investigation

Sun, 6 Jun 2010

The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has announced that it is conducting an investigation into the lobbying of public officials and public authorities in NSW and the related procedures and regulatory system.

"PRIA has been participating in the reviews of federal and the various state lobbyist legislation and codes of conduct for some time and PRIA welcomes the opportunity to respond to ICAC to ensure a high standard of professional practice in the area of government relations and lobbying," said PRIA Chief Executive Officer, Jon Bisset.

In addition, PRIA is taking the opportunity presented by the NSW ICAC investigation to develop a response that will underpin a consistent national position in relation to the requirements of both in-house executives and consultants working in public affairs.

Submissions to help inform the investigation and public inquiry are specifically sought in response to the ICAC's Lobbying in NSW – An issues paper on the nature and management of lobbying in NSW. The paper aims to generate community and agency response on the nature of lobbying in NSW, and whether changes need to be made to the current regulatory system. PRIA will be making a submission to the inquiry and also encourages interested parties to make submissions directly.

Submissions have been sought by ICAC from lobbyists, those that are lobbied, lobbying regulators, academics, public and private sector organisations, members of the public and other interested parties. The Commission will prepare a public report at the conclusion of the public inquiry, which is expected to be held later this year.

The issues paper and further information about the submissions process can be accessed here. Submissions are due no later than 5pm on Wednesday 23 June 2010.

PRIA draws upon the intellectual capital of the membership of PRIA when drafting policy statements and developing submissions and as such we call on any member with an interest in lobbying and government relations to let us know their views.
