President's message

Welcome to your monthly update from PRIA NSW.

Firstly I would like to thank all of our members who have helped PRIA get to where it is today.  Your support has allowed the insititute to develop, grow and our voice is getting stronger.  We celebrated last week with members drinks and the evening was a huge success.  We look forward to being able to provide more of these opportunities to you.

For those that may have not yet renewed, our simple online renewal process will make easy for you to do so.  Further details are included in this newsletter.

The Golden Target Awards were judged last week and I encourage you to register for the NSW State Awards for Excellence, which is being held at Luna Park on Thursday 25 September.  It promises to be a great night.

Once again, our events calendar is very full with professional development workshops, two events for corporate communicators and the annual 'Evening with a Fellow'.

We have 42 pending new members and welcome our most recent members mentioned in the newsletter.  Welcome to the PRIA community.

PRIA NSW Members Drinks

On Thursday 7 August, PRIA NSW celebrated the success achieved over the past 12 months.  Some of the highlights of PRIA NSW include:

  • 11.7% growth in membership
  • 38 events
  • 46 participants in the Mentoring Program
  • Record number of entries in the Golden Target Awards
  • Increased sponsorship revenue - reinforces the value others are seeing in PRIA

Many thanks go to the sponsors, Aquent, for supporting this event and congratulations to Lukas Picton from Text 100 Public Relations, the lucky winner of the $300 spa voucher at The Observatory Hotel.

A great night was had by all and we hope to continue hosting these events to thank you for your continued support.

On Friday 22 August, the PRIA Corporate Communication Committee will be hosting a luncheon that will provide insightful and practical tools to enhance employee engagement.

Derek Duffy from Hewitt will define best practice using case studies that demonstrate effective employee engagement. Derek will touch on the Hewitt Best Employer Award, highlighting what defines a winning company.

Crisis Communication

At a time when crisis communication is a hot topic, the PRIA Corporate Communication Committee is pleased to present an evening seminar on best practice crisis communication and planning.

Antoni Lee from Redact communication training practice will present the theory and strategy for crisis communication, how to prepare, what to do and what not to do.

Bill Pickering will present case studies including the 1996 Black Hawk down, highlighting what crisis communication strategies were implemented.

Evening with a Fellow

Public Relations as a Profession: Education and the Practice 

Special Guest:  Professor David Potts, BA, MSc, FPRIA

Pioneer educator David Potts has had a variety of roles within the PRIA including; NSW Councillor for many years from 1961, Chairman of the National Accreditation Examination Board and a member of the National Education Committee (1985-2001).  In 1971 David founded Australia’s first School of Communication at Mitchell College of Advanced Education, now the highly regarded Charles Sturt University, Bathurst.

In this Evening With A Fellow, David talks about the establishment and development of public relations education in Australia from the 1970s and where it might be headed. He also presents his wish list for the future of the profession.
