$10,000 Royce Student Fellowship

The Fellowship was established in 1988 in memory of Jon Royce, the late founder of what is now Royce (VIC) Pty Ltd, a prominent Melbourne-based public relations consultancy. Jon was the first Australian President of the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) and was instrumental in bringing IPRA’s world conference to Melbourne in 1988.

Unfortunately, Jon died of cancer before the conference took place. Jon’s widow, Lynne, who was also a Director of their consultancy, died in a car accident in 1992, and so the Royce Fellowship is named in memory of them both.

The profit from hosting the IPRA conference was handed to the Trust and generously funded by the Royce Group.

Each Fellowship provides up to $10,000 to enable students to build their public relations experience and advance their understanding of the profession.

In 2005, two applicants were jointly awarded the Fellowship. Lidia Sakarapani and Alissa Sharples, two undergraduate students from Curtin University of Technology in Perth, used the funds to pay for a shared research project in China in 2006.

The two Fellowship winners completed their university degrees in Beijing and researching the public relations and media environment there.

They interviewed professionals in the China offices of international PR consultancies such as Hill & Knowlton, Porter Novelli, and Ogilvy PR, and also interviewed corporate PR practitioners from Kraft, Lilly Pharmaceuticals and General Motors.

The US PR Council on their Public Relations Tour of China also hosted them on a seven-day PR tour of China in April, 2006.
