Donald Dyer Scholarship

The Donald Dyer Scholarship is now available for 2008, and you can find the close off on the University South Australia website.

Applications are now being sought for the Donald Dyer Scholarship for Public Relations and Communication the largest research scholarship available in Australia for communication practitioners. Backed by the PRIA, and made possible by a generous bequest from the estate of the late Sylvia Dyer, the scholarship offers the opportunity to further develop advanced research in PR, normally at a PhD level.

Stipend: A$24,010 per annum (tax-free), 2008 rate. Plus one return travel airfare between the candidate's home location and Adelaide, and organised by the University.

Early career and experienced practitioners are encouraged to
consider the career option of PR research. Candidates normally complete a PhD in 3 years full-time; however, the trustees of the Scholarship will consider part-time scholarships for those applicants who prefer to continue to work.

Donald Dyer Scholars

Dr Collette Snowden was the first Donald Dyer Scholarship holder, and is currently a lecturer in Public Relations at the School of Communication, UniSA.  Here topic of research: News and Information to Go: Mobile Communications, Media Processes and Media Professionals

Leanne Glenny moved from Canberra in 2005, where she lectured in Communication, and is the current Donald Dyer Scholarship holder for 2005.  Her topic of research: The anatomy of persuasion in government communication: a grounded theory approach to dialogic communication in the public sector

Kate Mirandilla is our current 2006 recipient, and was a lecturer in Communication in the Philippines.  Her topic of research: A cross-cultural comparison of the Crisis Communication Management mechanisms of organizations in the Australian and Philippine contexts

Application process:

Prospective candidates can access the application form via the online web

  1. The application form, also includes a section to outline your thesis topic. Apply Online
  2. You will be required to provide two certified copies of academic transcripts
  3. Two independent academic referee reports
  4. Two certified copies of birth certificate or passport credentials
  5. Two copies of the candidates work experience
  6. The thesis outline will need to show an academic/industry focus on Public Relations and Communication research
