Tackling Social Media

With more than 7 million fans and followers over more than 500 Facebook and Twitter accounts, the US State Department is a leader in the use of social media.

Alison Barnard, is a senior media affairs specialist at the US Consulate in Sydney and is one of the US Embassy’s social media community managers. She has assisted with State Department social media campaigns conducted in Australia and overseas and was heavily involved in President Obama's historic visit to Australia. The US Embassy harnessed the power of social media to take their fans, "behind the scenes" of President's Obama's stops in Canberra and Darwin. Alison will present a case study of the State Department's social media strategies in Australia and their #POTUSinOZ social media campaign, along with real-world tips and suggestions for experienced and new social media practitioners alike.

Alison Barnard will discuss effective social media tools appropriate to agencies and government bodies; she will use case study examples from State Department social media campaigns and provide helpful insights to build your next social media campaign.
