2013 MAY - WA: Digital and Social Media for PR practitioners

This 2-day workshop is designed for public relations practitioners working as sole practitioners, or in small to medium agencies, as well as practitioners working ‘inhouse’. It will provide participants with a framework for developing their own social media program products for clients. Topics covered include strategy development, planning and developing content, the fundamental of search engine optimization, analytics, and risk management frameworks.

Understanding strategy and strategy development.
What is social media strategy, how is social media strategy integrated with existing public relations and marketing programs, the process of developing strategy.

What is content marketing and how does PR connect, manage and execute content marketing strategies.

Beth has been consulting to businesses and training people in using social media and digital tools for the past five years. Her specialization is how businesses can best use social media and digital marketing and communications for specific business outcomes and organizational change. Her clients include state government departments, regulatory authorities, and SMEs where she writes strategy, establishes risk mitigation frameworks, and conducts in-house training.

Beth has many years’ experience working in senior communications and marketing roles in the government, not-for-profit and private sectors.

She has tertiary qualifications in media and communications and a research Masters Degree in Digital Communication and Culture.

Beth lectures in Social Media and Digital Marketing in the Bachelor of Business program at the APM Institute and writes and facilitates social media and digital marketing and communications training and professional development programs for the Australian Marketing Institute and the Public Relations Institute of Australia.

2013 May Robert Jensen Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Department of Homeland Security

Bob Jensen has worked alongside President Obama for many years as the key advisor on media and public affairs in the Whitehouse and was intrinsic in developing communications strategies for the US in Afghanistan in early 2008, Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon Gulf Oil Spill in 2010 to name only a very few major projects.

Currently the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security in the US, Mr Jensen will give a special breakfast presentation for PRIA on May 29 in Brisbane and will share his knowledge in strategic communication planning, legislative and intergovernmental affairs and engagement with the private sector and more. He will also be available to answer questions during the event.

After 29 years in the industry the former Assistant Press Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Director for Public Affairs and Communications for the National Security Council at the Whitehouse has a wealth of knowledge to share that should not be missed.

This guide has been developed in response to new laws governing work experience and has been created by the PRIA in consultation with industry, academic institutions and workplace law specialists.

The timing is excellent as it is increasingly clear that Fair Work Australia is targeting creative and communications industries to ensure compliance with these new rules. Persistent or significant breaches may result in significant fines and penalties for Directors and any public cases may act as a deterrent for attracting new talent into PR - something our industry can ill afford.

How diverse is the Australian PR industry? Are we too female? Too white and middle class?

If we are about helping organisations deliver their message in the most effective way to an increasingly diverse population, do we not need to be more representative of that population to provide the best advice?

Why are people from Asian backgrounds so under-represented in our agencies considering our geographical proximity and the number of new Asian brands entering the market? This is the Asian century after all.

Speed Networking at Victoria's Small Business Festival

You may have seen our recent speed mentoring event that took place last month at HASSELL (pictures above). Well, we had so much fun and a lot of positive feedback about the event. Attendee's on the night enjoyed the opportunity to networking with fellow members which they might not get to do that often.

We're delighted to announce that Victoria's small business festival have invited the PRIA to host a speed networking event as part of the festival.

They have supplied us with a wonderful venue at the Festival Hub at Fed Sqre in the heart of Melbourne's CBD.

PRIA Victoria: Regional Seminar & Social

PRIA's first Regional Seminar!

We live in the most beautiful country in the world with some of the most picturesque views on this planet, so let's embrace this.

When we asked our members last year what types of seminars you'd like to see in 2013, regional seminars was a topic that came up from several sections.

Even though Victoria is the smallest state in Australia, it still covers a vast amount of area and it will be difficult to accomodate everyone in person at the one location.

However, we've been working with Business Event Victoria already to best see where we can host this event. To date, we're hoping to host it in Geelong. Geelong hopefully will only be the beginning of regional support to our members. We hope that by having it here, we can capture members in Ballarat, Geelong, Warrnambool, Metropolitan Melbourne and potentially Horsham.

We're also looking into video conferencing in other regional members into the seminar so we don't lose anyone.

More details to follow in the coming months but if you have a topic or issue you feel relevant to PR in regional Victoria please let us know so we can address it on the day.
