Sydney, November 19, 2012 - The honours bestowed at the National Golden Target Awards increased by two this year, with ‘Campaign of the Year’ and ‘Educator of the Year’ celebrating outstanding contributions to the public relations and communications industry.
‘An Extraordinary Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting’ by Carolyn Bacher, Tourism Western Australia, won the inaugural Campaign of the Year trophy. It describes the way Carolyn and her team at the Department of Premier and Cabinet Team, Tourism Western Australia used Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) as an opportunity to promote the State of Western Australia to the world.
“In every way this campaign was executed in a deft and professional way, with remarkable results”, praised the judging panel. The judges further commented that the entry was an excellent example of triumph in planning and integrated communication, and would provide excellent guidance for others in the PR profession.
The Campaign of the year award recognises the ‘best of the best’ from the winners of the 16 Golden Target Award (GTA) categories. One of two National GTA winners for the Government Sponsored Campaigns category, the entry by Carolyn and her team drew from the CHOGM held in Perth in October 2011.
Jim Macnamara was awarded the inaugural Educator of the Year award, in recognition of his “enormous contribution to the public relations industry over many years”. Jim is Professor of Public Communication at University of Technology, Sydney and was appointed UTS Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in 2011.
The judges were particularly impressed by Jim’s clearly articulated teaching philosophy, accompanied by solid evidence of its implementation and their decision was unanimous: “The recently published text book by Professor Macnamara is a notable achievement. Research output for 2011/12 was prolific and of international quality, consistent with Jim’s position as a Level E Professor”.
The Campaign of the Year and Educator of the Year award announcements were made before over 500 guests at the GTA Gala Dinner at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, as part of the 2012 World PR Forum. The Golden Target Awards showcase campaign excellence by members of the Public Relations Institute of Australia.
