Social Media Strategy 101

  • Prepared by Lloyd Grosse MPRIA

The public relations profession has gone beyond the social media learning stage and are now keenly looking to integrate it into our professional strategy. As such this unit is taking the "L" plate well and truly off this program and intends to boost the level of high strategic thinking on this topic.

We offer a "101" unit as well but it is assumed in this presentation that you will have an understanding of the following terms and tools. This page has been created to ensure that you can gather the set of pre-requisite knowledge prior to the day.

  • As an exercise participants should search Technorati for your products/issues/clients/company and have an understanding of the conversations about you.
  • As an exercise participants should start their own blog on Blogspot.
  • As an exercise participants should start their own wiki on Google Sites.
  • You should also have a LinkedIn and FaceBook page.
  • You should have read the Cluetrain Manifesto (or at least be familiar with the 95 theses - at www.cluetrain.com).
  • Watch the Text 100 Tour of Second Life - PRIA Webinar (around an hour)

Andy Lark (ex NZ PR professional and blogger), VP, Global Marketing, Dell - Interview by Uberpulse: Social Media is Core to Dell's Marketing Strategy

"The social media stuff is probably the most important we do today, from a marketing stand point. The other elements of marketing mix has sort of become more and more transactional and more and more tactical in nature. Social media stuff is much more strategic... Use social media to power the fundamental of the business. That's what we're focused on".
