NSW: Managing the Media in a Crisis

This practical workshop takes participants through the essential elements of effectively managing the media during a crisis / critical incident. The methodology, used internationally as well as Australia, can be adapted for spokespeople as well as key front-line staff.

Participants wil learn about:

• The guiding principles of effective crisis media communication
• Structuring messages during a crisis / critical incident
• Critical elements of effective media language – speaking from the heart not the head
• The stages of a crisis –what media are looking for and what that means for you
• Do’s and Don’ts for dealing with the media during a crisis / critical incident
• Selecting and preparing the right spokespeople
• The importance of perception & impressions made – non verbal communication
• Troubleshooting – have your questions answered

Facilitator: Sonia Zavesky, Director, Zavesky Consulting Pty Ltd, MPRIA/MIABC

Sonia is a highly experienced media and communication trainer, specialising in crisis communication. She works with clients in the corporate, government, business and community sectors, providing customized training and advice.

Her journalistic experience includes almost a decade as a reporter/producer with ABC radio, working both in Australia and overseas. Sonia was also Chief of Staff of ABC Radio News. She has held the role of Direction of International Communication for a global not-for-profit organization, based in Europe.

A graduate of the Australian Film, Television and radio school, Sonia is a member of the PRIA, a member of the International Association of Business Communicators, and a Board Member of Action Aid Australia.
