NSW: Media Release Strategy February 2012

On any given day the average newsroom will receive thousands of media releases, so how do you get yours to the top of the pile?

Obviously it needs to be well written but timing, tailoring, strategic targeting and follow up can make the difference between coverage and your release ending up in the bin. This interactive, hands-on workshop is suitable both for new practitioners and those with more experience who want to polish their skills.

The workshop will cover:

  • What makes news - the key ingredients your release must contain
  • Tailoring releases for different media outlets
  • Who to target and how to tap in to their agenda
  • Timing is everything - when to release your release
  • Using the visual and audio aspects to help "sell" your story
  • Be a talker rather than a stalker – how to follow up
  • Prepare before they're there - what to do BEFORE the media arrives

Workshop facilitator: Jayne-Maree Sedgman, mediasavvy.net.au

Jayne-Maree Sedgman worked as a radio and television journalist for 15 years before becoming an accredited media trainer and Principal of Media Savvy. Her career took her from newsrooms in Geraldton to Perth, Brisbane, London and finally Sydney where she spent 8 years working for ABC News and Current Affairs.

A stint in media relations for a major company gave Jayne-Maree an invaluable insight into balancing the media’s needs with an organisation’s best interests – a skill she now shares with clients from the corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors. She specialises in demystifying what journalists want and helping clients view media interviews as strategic opportunities. Jayne-Maree has a BA (Journalism) and a Certificate IV Train the Trainer.
