Graduation can be a daunting time – Your student life is just coming to an end and you’re often expected to know the next step in your path to success. Sometimes, university learnings fall short of real-life working experience and expectations in the industry. The PRIA Queensland Division recognised this difference and developed their annual Meet the Industry event.
Meet the Industry allows students, graduates, and young practitioners to network with expert speakers who have the industry know-how. Known as the ‘brain trust’, these speakers share their career highs and lows, and most importantly, their top tips to get ahead of the competition.
We recently caught up with Collin Myers AM FPRIA, Principal of Collin Myers Investor Relations, who is part of the ‘brain trust’ at the upcoming Meet the Industry event. Collin was kind enough to share his career advice.
“It is crucial that you believe in what you’re doing. If you enter PR tainted by cynicism, it will never work out.”
Collin began his career in journalism with a vision to add value for everybody. He aimed to align the interests of client and recipient. This vision carries across to the fundamentals of PR and communications.
“You really need to believe in the community and business values. You need to start from that point of view”
Collin also stressed the ability to write well – clear and correct writing is a core skill for anybody looking at a career in communications.
Before our time was over, we asked Collin to share the best advice he had ever received. One specific sentence from the Chief Publicity Officer of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia came to mind:
“You know your succeeding when you’re sick of you own message.”
To hear more from Collin, please join him at Meet the Industry next Tuesday, 7 August.
