The Pitch This! competition, developed by Dr Nicole Bridges in consultation with public relations academics and the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA), is the first national competition of its kind that was designed to develop public relations students into professional practitioners. The competition recognises that Australia has a number of tertiary courses where students are developing the skills and knowledge in public relations practice.
This year's competition brief was provided by Mr Richard Smith, Director Safety, Quality and Sustainability - Amcor Flexibles, ANZ. The brief to students was around employee education and awareness aimed at improving workplace safety and decreasing accidents. It provided students with an interesting insight into the types of communication programs that are not commonly association with public relations.
The Pitch This! competition final event, sponsored by Edelman and the PRIA, was held on Friday, 4 October at Western Sydney University, Parramatta City campus as finalist teams presented their campaign proposals to the judging panel. The panel comprised of Western Sydney University graduate Lisa Skupch, Senior Account Manager, Integrated Projects at Edelman, Shane Allison, NSW President of the PRIA and Richard Smith of Amcor.
At the conclusion of the event, the team from Charles Sturt University were crowned the winners, with the Western Sydney University team awarded Highly Commended. Prizes included highly coveted internships with Edelman and PRIA professional memberships. Victoria Erskine from CSU has kindly agreed to take on the hosting role for the 2020 competition.
