PRIA declares support for the 'Uluru Statement from the Heart'

Wednesday 03, Jun 2020

To mark the significance of National Reconciliation Week 2020, the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) and the Registered Communications Group (RCG) of the PRIA have declared their formal support of the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart was released in May 2017, and represents a national Indigenous consensus position on Indigenous constitutional reform which was drafted after 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander delegates came together for a three-day constitutional convention.

The statement also followed 13 regional dialogues held around Australia during a year-long consultation process. The Uluru Statement from the Heart calls for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution as a priority for constitutional change, requiring a referendum.

PRIA National President, Leigh McClusky called on other communication agencies across Australia to support the historic mandate.

“It is important as the peak industry body for Public Relations and Communications in Australia that we acknowledge the Uluru Statement from the Heart. We are proud to walk along First Nations Australians on this journey – together.”

RCG Chair, Lisa Portolan said: “It’s never been more important to be visible in our understanding and support of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. We acknowledge the statement as a historic mandate.”

The PRIA statement reads:

Thank you for the Uluru Statement of the Heart, and the opportunity to walk alongside you on this journey with all Australians.

We acknowledge this historic mandate.

We support your call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution and for a referendum as a national priority and the process of Makarrata.

We hear you.

Advocate for the Uluru Statement and signatory, Torres Strait Islander man Thomas Mayor, welcomed PRIA’s announcement.

“The Australian people believe in fairness, and when they learn of the Uluru Statement, they will support it and the referendum to enshrine a Voice in decision making. PRIA’s announcement is important to this, through their networks and expertise, our campaign can only get stronger,” he said.
