Meet our PRIA National Conference MC: Michael Rowland, ABC

Mon, Oct 12 2015

13 days and counting until our national conference 'Huge Transformations' from 25-27 October, in Hobart, Tasmania.

Today we are catching up with conference host, Michael Rowland, ABC, to get a little insight into our master of ceremonies.

How does this year’s theme ‘huge transformations’ relate to you in your work?

‘Huge transformations’ and ‘media industry’…hello?

What piece of technology has changed the way you communicate?

Any of the social media platforms, particularly Twitter and FB. They are vital in getting our content out to a wide as possible audience and, importantly, allowing us to interact with those who watch or follow us.

What buzzword of 2015 annoys you most?

Where do I start?? ‘Drill down’ and ‘Let’s unpack this’ would be up there as the most annoying. What’s happened to simply explaining stuff?

How important are digital and social in our day-to-day?

Vital. It is increasingly a core part of my job. The challenge continues to be unhooking yourself from technology for periods of more than 5 minutes!

If there was a fight between a journalist, a marketer, a PR professional, an advertiser, a tech guru, a digital whizz and a creative, what tool would you bring to the fight and who would win?

Do I really need to answer this?

How do you manage work life balance? What does your daily routine look like?

It is always a challenge but working breakfast TV hours does open the day up somewhat. The alarm rings at 3am every morning(!!) I’m in at work shortly afterwards to read in and plan the show. On-air from 6am to 9am, then a post-show de-brief before getting on with the day.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Women’s Day, New Idea, Australian Women’s Weekly, NW…

If you had to leave your house in a rush, what is the one thing you could not leave without or leave without doing?

My family (and maybe my iphone).

Have you been to Tassie before? What are you looking forward to seeing?

I started coming to Tassie in the mid-1990’s and just love it! I have a special fond spot for Hobart, which has got to be one of Australia’s greatest cities. The crisp air, the scenery, the clean, green food and the wine. What’s not to love?

If you want to catch our maestro in action, book your ticket today for the PRIA National Conference, 25-27 October in Hobart, Tasmania, before standard rates closes on 15 September 2015.
