PRIA stands with PRCA on holding industry to account in ethics

The Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) today issued a statement supporting the decision of the PRCA, Europe’s largest professional PR and communication body, to expel Bell Pottinger from the Association.

President of the PRIA, Jennifer Muir, explained today that the PRIA is the professional body representing public relations and communication professionals in Australia and that all its members are duty-bound to adhere to the highest ethical standards and professional competence, to act responsibly and to be accountable for their actions.

Members of the PRIA comprise thousands of professional practitioners working in government, corporate, not for profit, and consultancies across Australia. Every member is bound by their adherence to the Institute’s Code of Ethics, and reported breaches are dealt with by PRIA's College of Fellows. The PRIA also represents many public relations and communication consultancies that must also adhere to the Consultancy Code of Practice.

"The Australian industry is recognised for its high standards of professionalism and ethical behaviour, and works diligently to maintain this reputation.

“Any breach to the PRIA Code of Ethics and Registered Consultancies Group Consultancy Code of Practice are treated in the most serious manner and the PRIA will come down hard on anyone found to have breached the Codes,” said Ms Muir. “PRIA stands with PRCA and other PR and Communication industry peak bodies around the world in acting swiftly in response to any actions by members that bring the industry's reputation into question."
