Vale Stewart Murrihy FPRIA

The PR community was saddened this week to learn of the passing of Stewart Murrihy FPRIA. Stewart had been battling bowel cancer for many years, and finally succumbed to complications related to the cancer.

After a successful career in journalism in press, radio and television, Stewart Murrihy spent some 40+ years in the public relations profession, both in private consultancy and Corporate Affairs in Tasmania and Victoria for major Australian organisations in various fields including aviation, tourism, resources, chemicals and manufacturing. He worked for Corporate Communications (Tas) Pty Ltd, for many years before joining forestry company, North Forest Products in Tasmania and then moving to Melbourne.

For the majority of  his public relations career, Stewart was Chief Communications Officer at Incitec Pivot Limited, the Melbourne-based company which is Australia's largest manufacturer and distributor of fertilisers and the parent of Dyno Nobel, the world's second largest manufacturer and distributor of commercial explosives for mining and construction.

As CCO, Stewart worked with the Managing Director, the Board and Senior Management on Communications Strategy and Reputation Management.  He established his own consultancy, Strategic Communications Solutions http://www.scoms.com.au/about.html  but continued to work for Incitec Pivot providing strategic advice and counsel.

Stewart twice won the Public Relations Institute of Australia's Golden Target Award as well as many State Awards covering Community Relations, Government Relations, Tourism Promotion, Issues and Crisis Management and Reputation Management. Stewart was a Fellow of the Public Relations Institute of Australia. He was Chair of the Program Advisory Committee for the Masters of Communication at RMIT University. Previously, he lectured and tutored at RMIT, Monash and Deakin Universities.

He will be so sadly missed by his colleagues and friends in the profession throughout the country.
